Body & Longevity for the beauty professional

03 · Focus area · Body & Longevity

Your craft asks something of your body every day.

Hours on your feet, arms raised, repetitive movements and working in the same position for long stretches are part of the craft. Body & Longevity helps beauty professionals work more consciously with posture, mobility and work habits, so you do not give your body attention only once it starts to protest.

Recognition

You learn the craft. But rarely how your body takes part in it.

During your training you learn technique, timing, form and result. Far less attention goes to how you stand, how long you work in the same position, how often you repeat the same movement and what you can do throughout a workday to give your body more variety.

Especially in a craft that asks for a lot of physical repetition, small work habits can make a big difference over the long term.

Insight

Repetition adds up.

A single long day is one thing. But repeating the same posture, the same hand position and the same movement day after day can mean that certain parts of your body carry more and more load.

That is why Body & Longevity is not about sitting or standing perfectly. It is about awareness, variety, mobility and practical adjustments you can apply during your work.

Not a perfect posture. But a smarter way of dealing with how you move and work.

What you learn

What you learn within Body & Longevity

Posture Awareness

Becoming more aware of how you stand, bend, reach and work throughout a day.

Mobility

Simple mobility routines for the areas that carry a lot of load in the craft, such as neck, shoulders, back, wrists and hips.

Movement Variety

Learning to create more variety in postures and movements during your work.

Sustainable Work Habits

Practical habits around working height, breaks, positioning and recovery.

On the work floor

Small adjustments during a normal workday.

While blow-drying

Working more consciously with working height, shoulders and arm position.

During make-up

Not leaning forward for minutes on end when you can adjust your model or chair.

Between clients

Short mobility moments instead of moving straight on to the next position.

During long days

Looking for variety in how you stand, sit and distribute your weight.

For whom

Do you recognise yourself in this?

Posture

You notice that after long workdays you get stiffer or more tired in your neck, shoulders or back.

Repetition

You make the same movements for hours and wonder how to deal with that more wisely.

Mobility

You feel that certain movements become less free or comfortable than they used to be.

Long term

You want to keep enjoying your craft for many years to come and would rather invest in your body earlier than only once something goes wrong.

Sustainable craftsmanship

Sustainable craftsmanship also begins with how you move.

How you begin

Two ways to get started.

Juliette den Ouden

By whom

I only learned to listen to my body once I could no longer ignore what it was saying.

After eleven years behind the chair, Juliette faced several physical injuries that eventually meant she had to let go of her work as a hairstylist. In the years that followed she had to learn all over again to look at how she moved, worked and loaded her body.

That experience changed her view of education. Technique alone is not enough. You also have to learn how to carry your body through a career that asks a lot of you physically. That is why Body & Longevity became part of JDO Wellbeing.

"I wish someone had taught me earlier to look not only at my work, but also at how my body carried out that work every single day."

Start where you stand

Begin before it feels necessary.

You do not need to have complaints to work more consciously with your body. It is precisely the small adjustments in posture, movement and work habits that can help you keep practising your craft in a more sustainable way.
